Photoshop Tutorials - Foggy forest

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a fabulous photo manipulation with a foggy forest and a bright lantern.

First, we will create the foundation using a photo of the forest and steps. Then add a waterfall, a bird, an arch and a lantern and combine all this with the help of adjustment layers, masks and brushes. At the end, we will add some more adjustment layers and draw the light from the flashlight.

1. Create the basis of the collage

Step 1

Create a new document (Ctrl + N) 2000 x 2000 pixels in size with the following settings:

Step 2

Open the photo with steps. Using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) (Rectangular Lasso), select only the steps and use the Move Tool (V) (Move) to drag the selected area onto the main working document. We place it at the bottom of the dense.

Step 3

On the steps there are extra light spots that we need to get rid of. To do this, above we create a new layer and transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G) for the layer with steps. Activate the Clone Stamp Tool (S) (Stamp) and remove the light spots.

Step 4

Go to Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Hue / Saturation (Layer - New adjustment layer - Hue / Saturation) (transform it into a clipping mask). Reduce Saturation to -67:

Step 5

Paste the forest photo onto the working document 1. Click on the second button on the left at the bottom of the layers panel to add a mask to this layer. Take a soft round brush (B) in black and hide the bottom of the forest to restore the visibility of the steps.

Step 6

Add a Curves adjustment layer above to darken the forest a bit.

Step 7

Go back to the layer with steps and above the Hue / Saturation layer (Hue / Saturation), create the Curves adjustment layer . Using a soft black brush (B) with an opacity of 15-30%, edit the mask of this adjustment layer to restore the light on the steps. The result of the work and the mask are shown below in the screenshots.

Step 8

Create another Curves adjustment layer to reduce the amount of light on the steps. Edit the mask of the adjustment layer and remove its effect on the upper steps, since more light falls on this area, so it should be lighter.

Step 9

Add a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), switch its blending mode to Overlay with 100% opacity and activate the fill with 50% gray.

Activate the Dodge ( Dodge ) and Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer), set the Range to Midtones , Exposure to 15-20%. We lighten the upper part of the steps and increase the saturation of the shaded areas. Also on the lower wide step we draw a falling shadow. Below you can see the result in the blending mode Normal (Normal) and Overlay (Overlap).

2. Finish working with the background

Step 1

Insert the photo forest 2 on the working document and add a mask to it. With a soft black brush (B) we hide the lower part, the side sections and the blurred central area to get the result, as shown below:

Step 2

Add a Hue / Saturation adjustment layer above and lower the Saturation to -100.

Step 3

Add photo forest 3 so that the foggy background is in the center of the canvas. Create a mask and edit the photo so that only the blurred area remains.

Step 4

Create an adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and reduce Saturation(Saturation) to -100:

Step 5

Add a Curves adjustment layer to darken this part of the forest.

3. Add a waterfall

Step 1

At the bottom of the working canvas, add a photo with a waterfall and reflect it Edit - Transform - Flip Horizontal (Editing - Transformation - Flip Horizontal). Using the mask, hide the upper part, leaving only a waterfall, stones and a bush on the right.

Step 2

Add an adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to discolor the waterfall, stones and bush.

Step 3

Add a Curves adjustment layer to reduce the brightness of the waterfall.

Step 4

Add a new layer in the blend mode Overlay (Overlap) with an opacity of 100% and fill it with 50% gray. Using the Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer) darken the stones.

4. Add the bird

Step 1

We cut out the bird and add it to the upper central part of the canvas. With the help of free transformation (Ctrl + T) we reduce it, since it is at a great distance from the viewer.

Step 2

Add a Hue / Saturation adjustment layer to discolor the bird.

Step 3

Since the bird is in the fog, using the Curves adjustment layer, reduce its visibility.

5. Editing the arch

Step 1

We cut out the arch from the original photo and place it above the steps. Using the mask, hide the lower part and combine the design with the rest of the collage elements.

Step 2

Create an adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and reduce Saturation(Saturation) to -100:

Step 3

Add a Curves adjustment layer to reduce the brightness on the arch. Use the soft black brush (B) to edit the mask of the adjustment layer to remove the effect in dark areas that are already quite dark.

Step 4

Create another Curves adjustment layer to add brightness along the contour of the arch. On the rest, using the mask, hide the effect.

Step 5

Create a new layer in Overlay blending mode with 100% opacity and a 50% gray fill. Use the Dodge Tool (O) (Clarifier) to brighten the contour, and using the Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer), increase the saturation of the shadows on the arch.

6. Add a flashlight

Step 1

We cut out the lantern and place it above the steps.

Step 2

In order for the lantern to be harmoniously combined with the composition, it must be covered with foggy haze. To do this, create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and reduce the contrast of the lamp.

Step 3

Under the lamp layer, create a new layer in the Overlay blending mode with 100% opacity and 50% gray fill (no clipping mask). Using the Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer), draw the shadow from the lantern on the steps.

7. Perform basic color grading

Step 1

Above all previous layers, add the Channel Mixer adjustment layer and adjust the Red channel :

Step 2

Add a fill layer Layer - New Fill Layer - Color (Layer - New fill layer - Color) and select a color for it # 21031e. Switch the layer blending mode to Exclusion with an opacity of 100%.

Step 3

Add a Curves adjustment layer to increase the contrast around the edges of the document. Using the mask, remove the effect in the central part, where the passage to the arch is located.

8. Add light from the lamp

Step 1

Above all previous layers, add a new one and use a soft brush (B) with color # 210402 to paint over the lamp and the area around it. Switch the layer blending mode to Linear Dodge ( Linear Dodge ) with an opacity of 100%.

Step 2

Create a new layer and use a soft brush with the color # d7a650 to paint yellow light on the lamp, steps, background details and the outline of the arch. Then switch the layer's blending mode to Overlay with an opacity of 100%.

Step 3

On a new layer with a soft brush with the color # ee9463, draw a bright highlight inside the flashlight. Switch the layer blending mode to Hard Light with 100% opacity.

Congratulations, we're done!
